SIMBAHAYAN SA MAYNILA
ANNUAL RECOLLECTION FOR 1994

SIMBAHAYAN RESOLUTIONS
for the 1994 International Year of the Family

BELIEVING that, as God's masterpiece of love, the family has been and shall always be the seed of communion for humanity;

AWARE that a subtle war is being waged by governments and private institutions in order to effect and enforce globally a new culture that is incompatible with our Christian vision of family, and that this war is of a spiritual, intellectual, moral, psychological, and socio-economic, and political nature,

WE HEREBY RESOLVE:

A.  GOD, CHURCH TEACHING, AND FAMILY CONSECRATION

1.

To firmly submit ourselves to God, our Creator, whom we shall continue to praise and thank, for He is the Author of nature and of the plan for each of his creatures;

2.

To hold fast to the teachings of our Church on the sacredness of life and the need for fidelity to our faith, as expounded in Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterium, specifically by studying the Universal Catechism;

3.

To pray that the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, may always remain a strong and able Pastor, and that all bishops and priests may remain faithful to his teachings and guidance on the family;

4.

To live by and foster the Marian spirituality of the Pope by consecrating ourselves and our families to the Holy Family -- to Jesus, through Mary, in union with Saint Joseph -- and encouraging others to do the same;

5.

To launch a spiritual offensive against anti-life forces through the consecration of families in the truth (cf. John 17) and an intensive and extensive campaign of spiritual warfare and return to the Sacraments;

B.  CONSTITUTION OF THE FAMILY BASED ON GOD'S PLAN

6.

To uphold the Trinitarian constitution of the human family as a community composed of husband and wife bound together in the covenant of marriage, and the children that are born as fruits of their love;

7.

To intensify the evangelization of families by fostering spousal love between parents, parental love of parents for children, filial love and obedience of children for their parents, and fraternal love among children;

8.

To stand firmly against so-called alternative family patterns and values that would lead to the disintegration of the family structure designed by God, while we reach out with charity and compassion to heal those who are wounded or find themselves socially dislocated or in situations which are not ideal;

9.

To propagate the ecological principle that the womb is the first human environment, and that contraceptives are chemicals and devices specifically intended to make that first environment non-habitable for human life;

C.  FAMILY ADVOCACY ADDRESSED TO VARIOUS SECTORS

10.

To foster in families a sense of social responsibility, that they may reach out to other persons -- especially children -- and families in need;

11.

To encourage mandated organizations, Basic Ecclesial Communities, and urban poor groups to work together, and to participate in the establishment of a nationwide network of Family Life Centers extending holistic family services at the parochial level;

12.

To urge leaders of the different religions and religious denominations to strongly support all efforts and endeavors to preserve the sacredness of the family;

13.

To encourage professionals, especially medical practitioners, to hold fast to their oath to preserve life;

14.

To enjoin teachers to refuse teaching materials and methods that would sow promiscuity among tender minds and, instead, to make the learning situations seedbeds that germinate values such as the sacredness of marriage, self-mastery, and the importance of moral virtues;

15.

To avoid any collaboration with population control agencies and groups which may serve only to give false justification and to 'deodorize' their anti-life programs;

D.  SPECIAL CONCERN FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

16.

With the help of teachers and catechists, to reinforce, and give fullest support for young people to grow in their fidelity to the Church and loyalty to the Pope, the successor of St. Peter;

17.

To proclaim to the youth the message of chastity and abstinence before marriage -- 'TRUE LOVE WAITS' -- and to inculcate in them the values and virtues to counteract the liberal sex education and the value-free 'population education' being fed to them by mass media, and the government departments of Health and of Education;

E.  INFORMATION COLLECTION, ACTION ON MEDIA

18.

To organize research teams and communication bureaus that will gather facts and information regarding promoters of contraception, abortion, sterilization, and euthanasia, and to expose and boycott all groups, agencies, and establishments which support these;

19.

To utilize every available means of mass communication to spread the truth and values about Catholic Christian family living;

20.

To challenge and exhort media institutions, for the sake of our nation and the common good of our people, to reject population control propaganda;

21.

To educate and evangelize TV, movie, radio personalities and all celebrities to prevent them from being used to promote population control and promiscuous lifestyles;

22.

To establish and abide by alternative -- Church-based -- media and entertainment classification services;

F.  FAMILY AND THE GOVERNMENT

23.

To block all moves towards legalization of abortion, by opposing the promotion of the contraceptive mentality and contraceptive use, and further to enjoin all families to join in this campaign;

24.

To enlighten the Philippine government and organizations collaborating with it, that its claims on a 'moral recovery program' are empty and its efforts are doomed to fail, if population control activities and liberal sex education for the youth continue to sow anti-family values;

25.

To systematically and openly campaign for and vote into public office only those candidates who uphold our family ideals and give faithful and effective witness, and to vote out of office any elected official who may jeopardize our families and society at large;

G.  FAMILY AND THE COMMUNITY OF NATIONS

26.

To protest the composition of the Philippine delegation to the talks related to the International Conference for Population and Development (ICPD) to be held in Cairo, Egypt -- on the grounds that some of its members are patently pro-abortion, that pro-life representatives are completely excluded, and that the delegation effectively gave tacit approval of the pro-abortion agenda.

27.

To formulate an alternative Philippine Position against the proposed draft of the Cairo Conference and present this to the United Nations as a protest manifesto.

FINALLY, we resolve to exercise our talents and gifts, and share these with one another so that, united as one body in Christ, we may give greater glory to God Almighty.

THESE ARE OUR WISHES AND RESOLUTIONS, expressed on this 29th day of May 1994, Trinity Sunday, and we, the undersigned, are God's Filipino People.
